On Tuesday, June 24, NARA at College Park announced changes on the NARA website that gave the appearance of a new policy to reduce physical access to the building. NARA’s website also indicated that anyone interested in conducting research with the archives could still do so despite the new policy. As of June 25, the NARA at College Park website has been updated to remove the language that appeared to restrict access to the building. Access to archives is a core value of the Society of American Archivists.
CHICAGO—Congratulations to the 26 new Digital Archives Specialists (DAS)! These archivists, who represent a variety of repositories around the country, earned their DAS Certificate from the Society of American Archivists (SAA) after completing the required coursework within twenty-four months and passing a comprehensive examination in May 2025.

June 18, 2025—The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) FY2026 budget justification eliminates funding for the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC). NHPRC administers grants to state and local organizations to preserve documents and records that inform our understanding of US history. Over the last four years, NHPRC has been funded at an average of $9.75 million each year.
June 9, 2025—Cuts to federal grant programs that support archives are causing harm to programs and operations at cultural institutions across the United States. Practitioners and institutions in the museum and history fields are reporting their stories of federal funding impacts. SAA remains concerned about these impacts, particularly due to reports SAA has received regarding threats to programs that support Tribal communities.
