April 30, 2018—SAA President Tanya Zanish-Belcher today notified the Chair and Ranking Member of the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence of SAA’s opposition to the appointment of Gina Haspel to serve as director of the Central Intelligence Agency:  “We note with profound concern and dismay Ms. Haspel’s alleged oversight of torture as director of a CIA ‘black site,’ as well as her involvement in the destruction of 92 videotapes documenting said torture. Ms.

SAA is conducting a series of pop-up surveys to gather feedback on members’ needs and interests. At this time, SAA is seeking feedback from mid-career professionals on their specific career needs and concerns. (“Mid-career” includes any archivist who has been in the profession for 5 or more years and is still at least 10 years from retirement.)

March 23, 2018—Today the Congress approved, and the President signed, a $1.3 trillion omnibus appropriations bill that will fund the federal government for the six months remaining in FY 18. Across the board, archives, history, and education programs were either level funded or received small increases—despite the President’s proposed elimination of the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Institute of Museum and Library Services, and other programs.
