At its August 13 meeting in Washington, DC, the SAA Council endorsed Protocols for Native American Archival Materials, a document that had been considered by previous Councils, and issued a statement about the endorsement concluding that, “The SAA Council acknowledges that endorsement of these Protocols is long overdue. We regret and apologize that SAA did not take action to endorse the Protocols sooner and engage in more appropriate discussion.”
On August 13, 2018, the SAA Council endorsed Protocols for Native American Archival Materials as an external standard of the organization. These Protocols establish a foundation for archival practice in caring for culturally sensitive records, and center Native American communities in the discussions of preservation and access to these materials.

Update, July 19, 2018
The SAA Council is seeking member comments on Best Practices for Internships as a Component of Graduate Archival Education and Best Practices for Volunteers in Archives. Both documents are now slated for their first periodic review since being approved in 2014. This initial call for comments will be used to determine if a review committee is needed to prepare substantive revisions to either or both of these best practice documents.
July 13, 2018—The SAA Executive Committee agreed to sign on to a letter, drafted by OpenTheGovernment.org, calling on Congress to immediately investigate the administration’s records management practices relating to the “zero-tolerance” immigration enforcement policy and family reunification efforts.
