March 29, 2024—This week, the Society of American Archivists (SAA) welcomes former SAA President Terry Baxter (Multnomah County Records and Archives) as a returning Council member for the 2023–2024 term. This transition follows the departure of Dominique Luster, who has been instrumental in advancing and supporting SAA.
March 22, 2024—The Society of American Archivists mourns the thousands of lives lost and condemns the damage to and destruction of cultural heritage institutions, such as historic sites, museums, libraries, and archives, as the result of the conflict currently ongoing in Israel and Gaza. Recent media reports suggest over 100 cultural heritage sites have been damaged or destroyed in air assaults, resulting in the destruction of irreplaceable tangible and intangible heritage, including archival records documenting the histories of Palestine and the Palestinian people.
March 20, 2024—The Society of American Archivists Foundation is excited to announce the opportunity for Annual Meeting Travel Awards to assist with attendance at ARCHIVES*RECORDS 2024 in Chicago, IL, taking place from August 14-17, 2024.
March 14, 2024—As communities of practice and information exchange, SAA sections are vital to supporting SAA members’ needs. The SAA Council periodically revisits the list of active sections to ensure they effectively meet membership needs.
March 12, 2024—Mark your calendar! Join the SAA Section Health Assessment Working Group for a forum to discuss the results of the Section Health Assessment survey and upcoming changes to SAA sections.
This survey and subsequent changes are part of a multi-year initiative to assess sections’ health and their effectiveness meeting members’ needs. Over the course of the year, Council liaisons will work with their assigned sections for which a decision to transition was made.
March 4, 2024—In the spring of 2023, the Section Health Assessment Working Group launched a member-wide survey to better understand the ways in which members engage with SAA sections and to gather ideas about other models of communities of practice. This survey, which closed on April 30, 2023, is a component of a multi-year initiative to assess sections’ health and their effectiveness in meeting member needs.
Four hundred and forty-nine respondents provided insight through this survey. Key findings from the survey include:
