Code of Conduct

Who are we: a group of womxn archivists who use this space for professional announcements or archives-related initiatives or issues related to our membership. We want to encourage informed, respectful discourse on this list serv and we want our members to feel safe when discussing challenging topics related to gender within our profession, or larger issues within our profession in general.

This Code of Conduct should serve as a guide, not just for our members, but individuals who engage with our members, regardless of their affiliation with the Society of American Archivists. The Women Archivists Section (WArS) is committed to providing a safe and harassment-free space for anyone interested in discussing issues related to womxn in the archival community, regardless of gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, age, race, ethnicity, political affiliation, national origin, or religion-and not limited to these aspects.

Harassment includes but is not limited to offensive comments that reinforce social structures of domination. Harassment also includes sexual images in public spaces, deliberate intimidation, stalking, unwelcome following, harassing photography or recording, sustained disruption of talks or other events, inappropriate physical contact, questioning another's choice of restroom based on perceived gender, and unwelcome sexual attention. Members asked to stop any harassing behavior are expected to comply immediately.

If a participant engages in harassing behavior, the steering committee members may take any action they deem appropriate, including warning the offender or removing them from the listserv; blocking them on social media; or barring them from attending the annual meeting. If you are being harassed, notice that someone else is being harassed, or have any other concerns, please contact the steering committee anti-harassment liaison immediately. If you do not feel comfortable reaching out to this individual, please feel free to contact any member of the steering committee, below, or contact SAA Headquarters.

This anti-harassment policy is based on the example policy from the Geek Feminism wiki, created by the Ada Initiative and other volunteers.
