RAAC members -- please be aware of this new threat to the NHPRC and know that we will follow up with a specific call to action once this bill hits of the House floor (might be weeks or months from now).
SAA learned this morning from the National Coalition for History that the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, which oversees NARA, will take up a bill tomorrow morning to address the recent data breach at the Office of Personnel Management. Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz, who introduced the bill, proposes to offset the costs associated with implementing it by eliminating the National Historical Publications and Records Commission. With markup certain today, we thought it important to notify you of this situation with an understanding that it will be very important to take action – both as individuals and collectively – when this bill comes before the House. We will notify you as soon as we’re aware of that timing. SAA is communicating with the Council of State Archivists and the National Association of Government Archives and Records Administrators regarding this situation and further action.
When it is time, and once we have more specific information for you, we will ask RAAC representatives to:
1.) Take action on behalf of your regional (such as writing a letter on behalf of your regional)
2.) Inform your regionals' members and ask them to also take action as individuals
Also, RAAC and SAA recently formed an agreement of protocol for acting on advocacy issues in archives, and this is our first use of that system. More information about this protocol will be posted on the RAAC microsite soon.
Thanks,
Amanda Focke, RAAC co-chair through August 2015
