2023 Steering Committee Nominees and Biographical Statements

Vice-Chair/Chair

(2-year term to replace recently vacated Vice-Chair/Chair position)

Josué Hurtado
I’m excited for the opportunity to serve as Vice Chair of the Reference, Access and Outreach Section. As an experienced public-services archivist I’ve dedicated my professional life to ensuring that researchers from all walks of life have access to the rich historical materials in our collections. I have over 20 years of experience in libraries and archives in various capacities and I bring more than a decade of professional service with me in numerous organizations; SAA, MARAC, DVAG, and PACSCL, among others. I’m committed to expanding the demographic diversity of our profession, as demonstrated by my past experience in chairing SAA’s Archivists and Archives of color roundtable, and the Pinkett, and Forman award committees, which seek to bring diverse perspectives and voices into our ranks and our collections. This experience and perspective are assets that I would bring to this role.

I am currently the Coordinator of Public Services & Outreach at Temple University’s Special Collections Research Center in Philadelphia, where I oversee all aspects of public services including instruction and reference services.  I have a range of experience in archives, academic libraries, and museums including UC San Francisco, The GLBT Historical Society, the Bancroft Library, and the Bentley Historical Library. I have an MSI degree from the University of Michigan’s School of Information and a BA in History from Stanford University. Thank you for your consideration.

At-Large Members

(2-year term)

Rakashi Chand
I am interested in joining the steering Committee for Reference, Access, and Outreach Committee as a Member at large. To begin, I am the Reading Room Supervisor at the Massachusetts Historical Society, having worked at the MHS in various roles for almost twenty years. I am a founding member of and former Co-Chair of the Massachusetts Historical Society’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee. I was appointed Chair of SAA’s Host Committee for the 2022 SAA conference in Boston. I have also served as the President of the United India Association of New England, an organization that promotes culture and advocacy. As the Reading Room Supervisor, I am the gatekeeper for one of America’s most unique collections of primary source material, and take great pride in providing access and opportunity for all peoples to consult the collections to create a more informed and thoughtful future. I would be delighted to join the RAO Sterring Committee and share my knowledge, network, outreach efforts and experience with the Committee.

Caelin Ross
My name is Caelin Ross (she/her) and I am running for an at-large membership position with the Steering Committee in the Reference, Access and Outreach section of SAA. As an early career librarian, I see the value of community building in our profession. My position is unique in that I am a librarian who curates an archival collection. I currently serve as the Performing Arts Librarian at Arizona State University, and curate the Child Drama Collection. A core aspect of my role includes specialized reference to graduate students in the MFA and PhD programs in Theatre for Youth and Community degrees. Reestablishing the relationship between faculty and students to this significant collection is an incredible opportunity that is quite challenging. My hope is to work collaboratively with colleagues in the Community Driven Archives Initiative at ASU. My role will include program and planning unique engagement with collections. I have worked in reference and outreach in previous years, specifically during my time at Northwestern University Libraries, as well as my service term in AmeriCorps.  I bring nearly a decade of library experience and am eager to collaborate with colleagues. Relationship building is crucial to our success as librarians. Being involved on this committee would be an incredible opportunity to share experience, stories, and information.
