Updates

Chair, Angela Stanley

Update on Section Meeting @ SAA Annual: Reached out to Felicia Owens, section meetings are tentatively planned for Wednesday, August 5th with an opening plenary/reception planned for that evening. General sessions beginning Thursday morning. Felicia offered that the PLASC meeting could be scheduled for the final slot late afternoon Wednesday to facilitate better attendance. Angela will provide exact time slot once she finds out.

Received survey distribution request from LSU Libraries - sent over PLASC listserv

Newsletter, Patricia Delara

Working on putting together the Winter newsletter with a planned January release. Need input on the actual release date. Patricia suggested she and Angela include a write up about presentations at SGA and CLA conferences on PLASC resources.

Patricia will send newsletter draft to section for edits/suggestions before publishing on January 8, 2020.

Social Media, Dylan Gaffney and Derek Mosley

Dylan was not present for the call, but Derek reported that they will be meeting at the end of this month to coordinate who will be in charge of social media channels.

Website, Johanna Russ

No reports for this month so far. Angela suggested having an area on the website that highlights current section highlights current section meeting dates and times, and a link out to our listserv. The “Joining SAA listserv” doc can also be pinned to help users (in particular nonmembers) sign up.

Survey Working Group, Catherine Oseas & Heather Lanctot

Report from Angela on behalf of Catherine and Heather:

  1. Investigate what resources are available already (i.e. data, surveys, etc.)-Heather

  2. Outline what data we want to collect -Catherine

  3. Outline what potential questions will get us the data that we want -Catherine

  4. Look into different ways to disseminate the survey (platforms, etc.) -Catherine

  5. Develop a list of listservs, etc. that we want to push the survey out through. For example I am thinking about listservs like California Library Association and Society of California Archivists.-Heather

    1. Maybe reach out to the section that Angela mentioned  to find information about gathering data/statistics/etc.

Discussion Items

Advocacy Toolkit additions (link to 2018 survey report): What other toolkit items would be helpful to PLASC members? Webinars, PL collection aggregator, other?

Patricia suggested including the button-maker document that she created for CLA; link out to workshops and/or classes. Angela suggested thinking about how we’d curate that list.

Update the list of resources on the microsite; is new literature available?

Angela suggested a webinar / panel presentation (one informal panel and personalized webinar) held 1-2 times a year for our members. Jo suggests including smaller libraries as they can face different challenges as opposed to larger library systems, and can be useful to network with them.

Project planning proposals - Angela brought up how she can find referencing other project proposals useful when drafting her own. This can be a topic for a future webinar, or we can do a call-out for a sample set of proposals. People can choose to redact their names and institutions if they submit.

Dylan had expressed concern regarding the current meeting time of the section (2nd Wednesdays at 3:00 EST/12:00 PST), and some other section members might have difficulty attending this specific time. Angela mentioned that we can discuss potential of changing future meeting time during our next meeting in January.

Action Items

Patricia will send newsletter draft to section for edits/suggestions before publishing on January 8, 2020. Jo and Derek volunteered to review.
