Mukurtu Workshop and Panel Event

Come join the SAA Privacy and Confidentiality, Native American Archives, and Collection Management Sections and the Center for Digital Scholarship and Curation at Washington State University for an exciting two-part Mukurtu Workshop and Panel Event that explores how to thoughtfully approach managing, restricting, and providing access to Indigenous archival materials in your collections.

Part 1 – Overview of Mukurtu will feature Lotus Norton-Wisla (Digital and Community Outreach Archivist at Washington State University) who will give a presentation about Mukurtu CMS – the free, mobile, and open source platform built with Indigenous communities to manage and share digital cultural heritage. There will be time after the presentation for a Q&A about the platform, so we invite existing Mukurtu users and those who are new to it to bring your questions. This 90-minute session will take place on Friday May 21st starting at 10am AKDT/12pm MDT/2pm EDT. Visit the May 21st Zoom registration page to sign up for Part 1 – Overview of Mukurtu.

Part 2 – Panel and Discussion will feature three expert speakers:

  • Selena Ortega-Chiolero (Museum Specialist at the Chickaloon Village Traditional Council)
  • Jennifer O'Neal (Assistant Professor in the Department of Indigenous, Race, and Ethnic Studies at the University of Oregon)
  • Cordelia Hooee (Tribal Archivist at the Pueblo of Zuni Governor's Office)

They will talk about their experiences using Mukurtu CMS and share how their institution approaches the Indigenous collections in their care. A lively Q&A section will follow presentations. This 90-minute session will take place on Friday May 28th starting at 10am AKDT/12pm MDT/2pm EDT. Visit the May 28th Zoom registration page to sign up for Part 2 – Panel Discussion and Questions.

Come to either or both sessions with your questions about how to use Mukurtu and how to integrate responsible and meaningful policies and procedures for working with Indigenous collections at your archive. If you have questions for either session that you’d like to submit anonymously beforehand, fill out the Mukurtu Workshop and Panel Event Question Form. Both sessions are free and will be recorded.  You do not have to be a member of SAA to attend – all are welcome!

If you have any questions about the events, get in touch with Privacy and Confidentiality Chair Rachel Gattermeyer (rgatterm@uwyo.edu). We are excited to see you there!
