Ashlyn Velte, Senior Processing Archivist for Rare and Distinctive Collections at the University of Boulder Libraries, and Sarah Coates, the Interim University Archivist at the George A. Smathers Libraries at the University of Florida, will present: "Balancing Privacy and Access: Private and Publicly Identifiable Information in Archival Collections."
Archivists at Colleges and Universities must navigate the presence of Private and Personally Identifiable information in their collections. However, trying to balance privacy and access to institutional history collections can be challenging as laws vary across states, and legislation like FERPA often leaves specifics for archival collections up to interpretation. During this coffee talk, we will share how we are currently approaching privacy and access. We want to have a discussion with others to see how they are navigating these issues and identify common sticking points. It’s our hope that this discussion will lead to further discussions of balancing privacy and access in institutional collections.
We welcome all sections to join us! Whether you want to contribute or simply listen in, we’re happy to hear from all members.
