SPEAKERS
Heather Briston is the Director of the Scholarship Tools and Methods program which includes the digital library, scholarly communications, reformatting services, GIS and maps, and data services at the UC San Diego Library. She received her MSI (Archives and Records Management) from the University of Michigan, a Juris Doctor from Syracuse University, focusing on intellectual property law. She is a member and past chair of the Society of American Archivists’ Working Group on Intellectual Property. She taught over twenty workshops for the Society of American Archivists focusing on legal issues in archives. She is the author of “Understanding Copyright Law” in Trends in Archives Practice: Rights in the Digital Era, and several book chapters addressing legal issues in archival collections.

Aprille McKay is the Lead Archivist for University Archives at the Bentley Historical Library at the University of Michigan, where her work includes collection development planning, fieldwork, appraisal, and accessioning of university-related collections. In addition to an MSI degree from UM’s School of Information, she earned a law degree from the University of Chicago. Aprille has been the chair of SAA’s Intellectual Property Working Group since 2013 and is a co-author (with Menzi Behrnd-Klein and Heather Briston) of SAA’s book 
Rights in the Digital Era.
