Mission Statement
To serve as a forum to educate archivists on the complexities and beauty of Native American archives of the Western Hemisphere and as a source of communication and inspiration for archivists working with Native American collections.
Section History
The Section (formerly Roundtable) was formed as a result of a petition at the 2005 SAA Annual Meeting in New Orleans. On August 13, 2005, SAA Council approved the Roundtable by a unanimous vote. For more information see the article, "Strengthening Tribal Archives," by Briana Bob, in the September/October 2005 Archival Outlook (page 21). David L. George-Shongo, Jr. (see photo) was elected the first NAAR Chair in 2005.

The Native American Archives Section is seeking nominations for our 2023-2024 Steering Committee positions!
This webinar will feature five members of the Taskforce, who will describe the process of developing the Reconciliation Framework, an introduction to the Framework itself and the next steps in their work. In our discussion and Q&A, members of the SAA hope to generate a discussion about how American archival and community colleagues might work together with Canadian colleagues on advancing Indigenous archival policies across these professional and national borders.
The Society of American Archivists Council has passed a motion creating a Repatriation and Ethical Return committee.
