Roundtable History

Roundtable HistoryDavid George-Shongo (Seneca), first NAAR Chair, 2005-2007

The Roundtable was formed as a result of a petition at the 2005 SAA Annual Meeting in New Orleans. On August 13, 2005, SAA Council approved the Roundtable by a unanimous vote. For more information see the article, "Strenthening Tribal Archives," by Briana Bob, in the September/October 2005 Outlook. David L. George-Shongo, Jr. (Seneca Nation) was elected the first NAAR Chair in 2005.

After the formal endorsement of the Protocols for Native American Archival Materials (PNAAM) by the SAA in August, 2018, the Native American Archives Section received SAA funding to undertake a project called "Implementing the PNAAM: Webinar Series and Resource Toolkit." It seeks to illustrate the application of the PNAAM in a range of archival settings and tangible ways to undertake its recommendations. Thus far, the NAAS has launched a series of case studies and webinars that help archivists, librarians, curators, and other professionals who work with Native American archival materials see examples of Protocols adoption in a range of institutional contexts.
