EAD Roundtable
Call Notes for 2014 November 3
Present: Suzanne Maggard, Ruth Kitchin Tillman, Monish Singh
Absent: Laura Starratt
EAD3 FAQ (Ruth)
Eleven questions so far. Getting some technical questions (e.g. date standards, why not a database, etc., simple to answer), and some more complicated ones (e.g. where are the resources to help with training). Ruth is going through, doing some triage on questions. Both looking at questions that came up in EAD3 webinar that Mark did. Ruth will send out post-triage for RT leadership to answer.
She will see what TS-EAD is doing for communications (she is coordinating with Kelcy)
Nothing from TS-EAD about release date, but most tickets are closed; they may be very close to being done in time for new year. What seems to be in process is other documentation.
High-level question: Why bother with EAD3 at all? Something to address at a high level, and possibly for each of the more important changes in elements.
DPLA and EAD (Monish)
Monish has communicated with Dan Cohen and has set up a meeting with Emily Gore and Amy Rudersdorf to discuss further. Main focus is on making this work in or out of content hubs. Jodi will follow up with Monish to join call.
Creating a metadata standard for EAD3 similar to what they have for CHOs would be an important element of such a project.
Discussion of other direction: not only harvesting EAD, but creating better context for CHOs.
Challenges of working on this aggregation: Various states or regions have unequal approaches to aggregation. Some have strong CHO, some have strong EAD, few have both.
Infrastructure for creating these relationships is local, customized, and highly variable.
If this moves toward shared practices for EAD3, wind together with follow-up from study groups.
Open Finding Aids (Jodi)
Jodi is working on a project not associated with EAD RT, but working toward an open data approach to finding aids, similar to open data practices of DPLA with CHOs, with Adrian Turner and Jennifer Schaffner.
Study Groups (Jodi)
Systems and Infrastructure (Adrian Turner): Getting survey responses with installations they didn’t hear from in August, continuing work.
Conversion and Migration (Elizabeth Dunham): Looking for more information comparing EAD 2002 and EAD3; Ruth has this and will follow up.
Discovery and Data Quality (Merrilee Profitt): Waiting for release of EAD3.
