CoE Chair and Vice Chair Job Descriptions

This is an informal document intended to provide the SAA Committee on Education’s Chair and Vice Chair with information about the typical expectations of these roles. It supplements SAA’s “Description of Committee on Education.” Though written to be in concert with the existing description of the committee, if anything in this document contradicts SAA’s “Description of Committee on Education,” SAA’s description takes precedence.

CHAIR

●      Communicates monthly with the Vice Chair and SAA Education Director to plan the agenda for monthly committee meetings. (~30min/month that includes reviewing notes from the previous meeting and emails that have been received in between.)

●      Sends agenda to full CoE in advance of meetings. (~30min/month)

●      Chairs CoE meetings. (1hr/month)

●      Writes the CoE Annual Report, usually due to SAA in September, ensuring annual reports from GAES and DAS subcommittees are included.

●      Recommends current members for Vice Chair/Chair position. (~30min/term that includes reviewing a list of members eligible for the position, and drafting a statement as to why you recommend that member.)

●      Reviews volunteer interest forms and recommends new committee members. (~1.5 hrs/term)

●      Represents CoE as needed in broader SAA meetings. (~2-3hrs/term)

●      Updates the CoE microsite as needed. (Time commitment varies, but this can be time consuming when it needs to be done depending on familiarity with the interface.)

●      Attends meetings organized by the SAA Education Director and/or SAA leadership as needed. (Time commitment varies.)

●      Participates in all other activities of the committee including serving as a liaison to SAA courses and being a member of a working group. (<30 minutes/month on average)

VICE CHAIR

●      Communicates monthly agenda items to the Chair. (<15 minutes/month)

●      Ensures note taking at meetings, whether taking notes themselves or delegating that responsibility. (1 hour/month)

●      Reads and provides comments on the CoE Annual Report.

●      Recommends current members for Vice Chair/Chair position. (30 minutes-1 hour/annually, assuming familiarity with CoE)

●      Reviews volunteer interest forms and recommends new committee members. (2 hours annually)

●      Serves as liaison to the Committee on Research, Data, and Assessment (CORDA). (1 hour/month for committee meetings, plus 30 minutes - 1 hour/month for any additional committee work)

●      Represents CoE as needed in broader SAA meetings. (varies)

●      Attends meetings organized by the SAA Education Director and/or SAA leadership as needed. (varies, approx. 5 hours annually)

●      Serves on the review committee for the Theodore Calvin Pease Archival Studies Award, in the Spring. (1-2 hour meeting, plus time as needed to review article submissions)

●      Participates in all other activities of the committee including serving as a liaison to SAA courses and being a member of a working group.

●      Informally advises the Students and New Archives Professionals (SNAP) group.

●      Recommends or serves as CoE representative on the Student Program Subcommittee. (3 hours annually in spring/summer)

●      Chairs CoE meetings if the Chair is unavailable. (varies)
