Joint EAS Section and TS-EAS annual meeting, Tuesday, July 6 (SAA Virtual Annual Meeting)

Greetings,

On behalf of the Society of American Archivists Encoded Archival Standards (EAS) Section Steering Committee and the Technical Subcommittee on Encoded Archival Standards (TS-EAS), I am excited to announce that registration is open for our joint EAS Section and TS-EAS annual meeting, to be held on Tuesday, July 6, 10:00 AM-12:00 PM CDT/11:00 AM-1:00 PM EDT/17:00-19:00 CEST. This meeting is being held as part of the broader SAA Virtual Annual Meeting.

Please see the event site  or use this direct link to register for the joint EAS Section/TS-EAS meeting. There are no costs to attend the session and it is open to all; SAA membership is not required.

This year, we are hosting a moderated panel discussion on the state of encoded archival standards. We have invited a panel of six archivists with diverse experiences and from a variety of locations and repositories to speak about how they use (or do not use) encoded archival standards in their work, and what they see as the standards’ role, function, and importance in practice. Our agenda, seen below, will start with updates and news, but the majority of our joint meeting will be devoted to this conversation. We will be preparing some questions for the panelists, but also encourage all attendees to participate in this discussion by asking questions and sharing their thoughts and experiences with encoded archival standards.

The agenda for the EAS Section/TS-EAS meeting is as follows:

Welcome and announcements

Council update

EAS Section update (Betts Coup)

TS-EAS updates (Mark Custer)

Art and Rare Materials (ARM) Bibframe Extension: Elizabeth Russey Roke, who represents SAA on this task force, will be speaking about the newly published ontology.

Moderated discussion on the state of encoded archival standards:

Natalie Adams, Cambridge University;

Karin Bredenberg, Kommunalförbundet Sydarkivera;

Jane Cross, Library of Congress;

Paige Roberts, Phillips Academy;

Jessica Sedgwick, Harvard Medical School; and

Jenny Swadosh; The New School

We are very much looking forward not only to sharing our updates with the community but also having a lively and engaged conversation about the role of encoded archival standards in our work. We hope that you will join us.
