Gabrielle Barr

Biography

Originally hailing from Virginia Beach, I attended The Johns Hopkins University, where I majored in history and minored in French cultural studies and museums & society. I obtained my master’s in information science at the University of Michigan, focusing on archives and records management, while simultaneously earning a graduate certificate in Science, Technology, and Society. Following graduation in 2015, I gained experience working with special collections at the Norfolk Public Library and as a project archivist at the Health Sciences Library at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  From 2017 to 2019, I took part in the National Library of Medicine Associate Fellowship program. During the first year of my fellowship, I was involved in a variety of initiatives including researching and testing web archiving software, processing audio-visual collections, and providing recommendations about NLM copyright statements. I spent my second year of the fellowship at Northwestern’s Galter Health Sciences Library & Research Center where I processed the 12th General Hospital Collection, digitized selected images and documents that were later uploaded to the digital repository and described according to best practices, created a digital exhibit, and engaged in outreach activities to publicize the collection. In April, I joined the Office of NIH History and Stetten Museum as their archivist and look forward to partaking in a number of different projects.

Interest Statement

With my aptitude for reaching out to a variety of Society of American Archivists (SAA)  constituents, strong organizational skills, penchant for exploring and implementing innovative ideas, and passion for championing science, technology, and health care related collections, I am confident I can serve the Science, Technology, and Health Care (STHC)  section as junior co-chair where I would take the lead in planning the annual section meeting and steering committee dinner, involve myself in steering committee initiatives, and help establish projects for section participants to engage in throughout the year. I have demonstrated my commitment to SAA by editing the STHC section’s newsletter, Archival Elements, from 2016-2018, which provided me the chance to familiarize myself with the subject specialties of the group as well as collaborate with the steering committee on setting submission parameters and have taken part in SAA’s mentorship program for the past two years. My involvement in other professional associations such as Librarians, Archivists, and Museum Professionals in the History of the Health Sciences (LAMPHHS), where I am responsible for maintaining the social media presence, and the Academy of Certified Archivists (ACA) would also be a boon for a person in this position.  As someone with a hard work ethic and a record for producing deliverables in a timely fashion, I would be eager to contribute to enhancing the vitality of the section and promoting its interests as the STHC junior co-chair.
