Binghamton University Libraries Digitizing Max Reinhardt Prompt Books

The Binghamton University Libraries are using grant funding from the Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation to digitize important scholarship from the Max Reinhardt Archives & Library (Max Reinhardt Collection).

The Max Reinhardt Collection covers major aspects of the life and career of celebrated Austrian-born theatrical director and producer Max Reinhardt (1873-1943). Recognized worldwide as a major creative artist, Reinhardt played a leading role in the transformation of the director as the key figure in theatrical production and the innovative use of new theater technology and experimentation with theater spaces and locales.

The grant provides funding to begin digitization of a collection of approximately 150 annotated director's promptbooks (Regiebuecher) through which Reinhardt conceived and from which he directed his productions particularly during their initial stages. The promptbooks clearly and comprehensively reveal the essence of Reinhardt's aristic vision and creativity  through annotations and drawings that chronicle a production as he envisioned it long before casting and rehearsals began.

The promptbooks will be converted into digital files descriptive information will be created for each promptbook. Access will be provided online via Omeka and other platforms.

The Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation promotes the advancement and perpetuation of humanistic inquiry and artistic creativity by encouraging excellence in scholarship and in the performing arts, and by supporting research libraries and other institutions which transmit our cultural heritage.
