2022 Election: Candidate Statements

Thank you to our excellent candidates for standing in the 2022 Local Government Records Section election. Please take some time to review their candidate statements and get to know them so you can make an informed choice.

You will be voting for:

  • One Vice Chair/Chair-Elect (or Co-chair), for a two-year term; and
  • Once Steering Committee members (three-year terms).

Vice Chair/Chair-Elect

Kelley Smith, CA, DAS

Archivist, Parks for Downtown Dallas/Individual Collection

Vice Chair/Chair-Elect

Non-profit/Individual

Candidate Bio:  My name is Kelley Smith and I am a Certified Archivist managing two collections in Dallas, Texas. I received my MLS from the University of North Texas in 2016, and my early experience included volunteering in the Dallas Municipal Archives, with incoming Chair John Slate, on a variety of projects and collections. From 2015 to present, I have managed two growing collections in the journalism and non-profit fields. In 2021 I completed the Digital Archives Specialist certificate through SAA, and from 2020 to 2022 I have been a member of the Preservation Section's Communications Committee, holding the Co-Chair from 2021-2022.

Candidate Statement: I’m thrilled for the opportunity to join the Local Government Records Steering Committee and be able to directly collaborate with the community. The non-profit collection I manage has a unique public-private partnership with the City, and my responsibilities include managing foundation records, implementing a digital archives and preservation project, and research and reference.

I believe there are some creative opportunities in my current role that overlap and benefit the local government records community, and look forward to exploring them with the section membership!

Steering Committee, Member-at-Large

Patricia Glowinski (she/her/hers)

Archivist, New York City Municipal Archives

Local Government Records Section Steering Committee, Member-at-Large

 Municipal

Candidate Bio: Patricia Glowinski currently serves as an archivist for the New York City Municipal Archives, a department within the New York City Department of Records and Information Services. She has held this position since 2017. Patricia received the SAA Digital Archives Specialist certificate in 2014 and earned an MLIS from Pratt Institute in 2008.

Patricia is a member of the Society of American Archivists, the Archivists Round Table of Metropolitan New York, the Mid-Atlantic Regional Archives Conference, the Oral History Association, and the National Council on Public History. She is also a member of DC 37 and serves as a shop steward for Local 154, New York City Amalgamated Professional Employees.

Candidate Statement: I appreciate the opportunity to serve as a Member-at-Large of the Society of American Archivists’ Local Government Records Section (LGRS) Steering Committee. In this role I would work to support the needs and interests of the LGRS members, represent their ideas and feedback when communicating with the SAA Council, and assist and collaborate with the section’s Chair, Vice-Chair, and other Steering Committee members to create and promote LGRS-related programming at the SAA annual conference and beyond.

Local Government archivists, records managers, and information professionals have specific mandates from local and state authorities that we must comply with. Stewarding records throughout the records lifecycle, providing access to those records, and complying with privacy laws (which can be very difficult to understand), are some of the large buckets of work that many of us have to manage, often with limited staff and fluctuating budgets. As public servants, we also serve diverse populations. I believe that DEIA-based thinking and practices (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Accessibility) must be the starting point from which we engage with people and envision, plan, and execute projects and initiatives. If elected to the LGRS Steering Committee as a Member-at-Large I would work to progress the resources, projects, and programming of the Local Government Records Section. Thank you for your consideration.
