International Archival Affairs Section

International Archival Affairs Section (IAAS) identifies and addresses issues and concerns of archives and archivists throughout the world; provides a forum for discussion, dissemination and promotion of issues related to international archival affairs. Below are our current virtual programs open to the public and any member of SAA.

Archival Landscapes virtual seminar series began in 2020. In each seminar, an international guest speaker introduces participants to the issues and advancements in their local context, describing the history, operating environment and unique aspects of archival practice in their country.

Please join us on Friday, August 28, 2026, at 11am EDT with Tamara Stefanac, Croatian archivist at the National and University Library in Zagreb, for the fourth Archival Landscapes seminar of the year.

Stefanac previously participated in a Vistas 2023 IAAS seminar where she briefly discussed her Fulbright Scholarship experience.

Archival Vistas Briefings virtual program series began in 2023 and discusses a topic or theme of international focus. The theme for 2025-2026 is AI and the Expanding Vistas of Archival Practice. In each seminar, an international guest speaker(s) introduces attendees to how they have interacted with an AI technology in relation to archival work and shares their aspirations, implementation, and development experience with it.

2024-2025 IAAS Elections

IAAS currently has two open seats on its steering committee. The Junior Co-Chair-elect serves as Junior Co-Chair for the first of two years of service and then as Senior Co-Chair in the second year. The Member-at-Large serves for three (3) years. We welcome your nominations including self-nominations; please send them to karenjtrivette@gmail.com. The deadline for all nominations is May 31, 2024, 5p EDT.

First Archival Vistas Seminar of the Year on March 20 with Amsterdam-based Archivist Arvid de Raaji

Arvid de Raaji will be discussing his knowledge and experience with Natural Language Processing techniques in the archival setting.
