Patrick Midtlyng (pmid@loc.gov)

Patrick Midtlyng is the Head of the Processing Unit for Recorded Sound at the Library of Congress’s National Audiovisual Conservation Center, where he oversees the ingest, organization, inventory control and cataloging of all recorded sound collection items and related materials acquired by the Library of Congress. Before LC, Patrick served as the Audio and Moving Image Archivist for the Special Collections Research Center and the Sound Archivist for the Belfer Audio Archive at Syracuse University. He began working with archival audio collections as a graduate assistant at the University of Chicago, where he earned his M.A in Linguistics in 2007.

 

 

Media Liaison

 

Calvin Rydbom (crydbom@pursueposterity.com)

Calvin Rydbom served as the Media Liaison for the Audio and Moving Images Section during the 2017-2018, and served on the Steering Committee previous to that. He is the Vice-President of Pursue Posterity, a freelance Archiving and Historical Research firm in Northeast Ohio. He is also the Vice President and Chief Archivist for the Akron Sound Museum in Akron, Ohio and recently published The Akron Sound: The Heyday of the Midwest's Punk Capitol. 

 

Newsletter Editor

 

Kelly J. Applegate (applegate.kj@gmail.com)

Kelly J. Applegate is a Metadata Specialist with The MediaPreserve, a division of Preservation Technologies, LP. She received her MS/LIS from the Illinois School of Library and Information Sciences in the spring of 2017 and moved to the Pittsburgh area later last year for her position with The MediaPreserve. Kelly has been published both on libraryjournal.com ("Legacy Matters: How Academic Repositories Can Fulfill Emotional Request") and in Cataloging & Classification Quarterly (“Achieving and Maintaining Metadata Quality: Toward a Sustainable Workflow for the IDEALS Institutional Repository”).

She has a passion for preservation and archiving which has become focused on audio and visual preservation since she began at The MediaPreserve. Many years ago, she worked in the pre-press production industry, and part of her duties were, in fact, proofreading and copyediting. She’d love to combine her past and present experience to serve as your SAA Audio & Moving Image Newsletter Editor.

 

Libby Savage Hopfauf (libbyhopfauf@gmail.com)

Libby Savage Hopfauf is the Program Manager/Lead Audiovisual Archivist at Moving Image Preservation of Puget Sound (MIPoPS) and Project Audiovisual Archivist at Seattle Municipal Archives (SMA) in Seattle, Washington. She received a Masters in Library and Information Science from the University of Washington and a Bachelor of the Arts in Creative Writing with a minor in Sociology from Western Washington University.  She is passionate about creating resources that provide intuitive use of open-source tools, making the digitizing process accessible to archivists (with a wide variety of skill-levels) to ensure the sustainability of institutions to preserve their videotape and conquer the magnetic media crisis.

  

Shannon Erb (serb@rockhall.org)

Shannon Erb is the Audiovisual Archivist at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Library + Archives. She holds a MLIS from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and has been a member of SAA since 2012. She has previously served as the Chair of the Visual Materials Section and on the Steering Committee for the Recorded Sound Section. She has also been actively involved with and held leadership positions in several different professional organizations including ARSC (Association for Recorded Sound Collections) and the Midwest Archives Conference (Archival Issues Editorial Board member). 

In serving as the newsletter editor for SAA AMIS, it is Shannon's vision to utilize her years of experience volunteering on editorial boards to maintain the successful representation of AMIS and hope to make it even an even stronger source of education and enrichment to our members. 

 

 

Steering Committee

 

Chou, Judy (Judy.Chou@disney.com)

I am an Asset Curation Specialist for the Disney Music Group (DMG), a subdivision of the Walt Disney Studio. I am in charge of cataloging all of our born digital music aspect of Disney, ranging from feature films to theme park music. I catalog all of all assets (audio, video, and graphics) into our digital asset management system so they can be made searchable by internal users including our international teams. I create naming conventions and writes policies/guidelines for both my division as well as the international teams. I am also a Board Member/Archivist Consultant for the Chinese Historical Society of Southern California. Before Disney, I was a Special Collections Assistant at the Getty Research Institute processing archival collections and writing finding aids. I received my Master in Library and Information Science from San Jose State University and received my Bachelor Degree in History with a Minor in Native American Studies from the University of California, Irvine.

 

Starratt, Laura (laura.starratt@emory.edu)

Laura Starratt is a Manuscript Archivist at the Stuart A. Rose Manuscript, Archives, and Rare Book Library where a key role of her work is crafting policy for audiovisual materials.  This work led to her article on audiovisual processing procedures at the Rose Library which will be published in Provenance, vol. 35, no. 2. She has been a member of SAA since 2009 where she has presented on various topics including outreach, digital access objects, and accessioning policies and has served on the Issues and Advocacy, Manuscript Repositories, and EAS section steering committees as well as chaired the Jameson Award committee in 2016.

In serving on the SAA AMIS Steering Committee, it is Shannon's vision to preserve the vitality of the group, foster teamwork and new initiatives, and maintain the diversity of talents available through AMIS. 

 

 

JA Pryse (japryse1@gmail.com)

JA Pryse is the Senior Archivist at the Carl Albert Center’s Congressional Archives. JA’s research and interests include Digital Content Management, Digital Archive Development, large-scale collection management, and information technology sciences. His specialties include archival preservation, conservation, and process policy management, audio engineering, and knowledge management.

JA served as the Director of the Digital Archives at the Oklahoma Historical Society where he oversaw the development and implementation of Digital Collection Policy, workflow, life-cycle preservation, and direct management of all digital items within the OHS Collections. JA also was responsible for grant acquisition, staff development, and the renown OHS Digital Internship Program. One of the main projects JA supervised and developed was the OHS Consultation Program for-profit to Oklahoma State agencies which included the Commissioners of the Land Office Digitization Program, the Oklahoma Department of Tourism and Recreation Digital Preservation and Digitization Program, The Oklahoma State Legislature Preservation and Digitization Program, and many Oklahoma Tribal collaborative digitization programs to create accessible digital collections for public research and fellowship.

Currently, JA is pursuing a PhD in the field of Information Policy and Management, and has both a Master’s degree in Museum Science (emphasis in archival management) from the University of Oklahoma, A Master’s degree of Information and Library Science (emphasis electronic records and archival science) from the University of North Texas.
