Creating and Revising Policies

Whether you are considering crafting a policy for the first time or are looking to revise an existing one, guidance and inspiration from others can help. Below we’ve compiled several starting points to help along the way -- literature to refer to as well as examples from which to draw inspiration. In the future, we hope to add testimonials from those who have seen the benefits of a good policy.

Literature

The Collection Development tag in the Appraisal and Acquisitions Section’s Zotero Library brings together both classic resources and new research on collection development policies.

The development of the bibliography is ongoing. Anyone is welcome to add to the library; please see the A&A Section Bibliography Guidelines for more information.

Collection Development Policy Examples

The subcommittee has compiled example policies from a variety of institutions, each responding to different collection focuses, institutional constraints, and user communities. The policies can be browsed and filtered by type of repository.

The policies are available in a public library folder on the SAA Connect platform, and can be browsed either through the folder, or through a list/search results view that allows for filtering.

The section plans to add policies on a continuing basis. Please contact us at appraisalsaa@gmail.com with any feedback or ideas for additional resources.
