The cataloging and application of standard arrangement and description of archival materials requires a unique set of skills separate from traditional library description. This course investigates the description of archival materials with particular emphasis on the application of electronic technologies and standard practices developed in the archival profession.  These technologies and standards are emphasized to help budding archivists master cataloging and description (finding aid) practices.  Students will become familiar with MARC- AMC and EAD encoding procedures, as well the the Describing Archives : A Content Standard (DACS) by describing an archival collection.  Students will also learn about the various open source software tools available to archivists, such as the Archivist's Toolkit and ARCHON.
