Introduction to the theoretical foundations, history, principles, and research surrounding the representation of archival materials. Examination and analysis of issues of effectiveness, economics, and audience surrounding different types of surrogates for archival collections including guides, calendars, finding aids, (in paper form and on-line), bibliographic records themselves, issues of context, appropriate levels of control, selection, and interpretation. Prerequisite LIS 2220.
