Virtual Book Discussion: Access in the Trends in Archives Practice Series

March 31, 2025—Approach privacy protected records with confidence! Join Megan K. Friedel and Ashlyn Velte, authors of the recently released Providing Access to Privacy-Protected Records at Public Institutions in the Age of Radical Empathy: Cases and Considerations, in conversation with Menzi L. Behrnd-Klodt, author of Modules 5 and 6 in Rights in the Digital Era, for a conversation about modern considerations surrounding privacy laws and professional ethical standards. The panel takes place April 11, 12:00–1:00 p.m. CT, and will conclude with a Q&A session with all three authors.

About the Panelists

Menzi Behrnd-Klodt is an experienced attorney, archivist, and archival educator. Behrnd-Klodt’s career focuses on corporate and organizational archives, notably American Girl/Mattel and TruStage financial services. She specializes in intellectual property, copyright, privacy, and contracts. Behrnd-Klodt teaches copyright, access and privacy, risk, and archival legal issues at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and basic archives at University of Wisconsin-Madison. She consults to historical societies, cultural centers, and museums. Currently, Behrnd-Klodt serves on SAA’s Intellectual Property Working Group and the Opioid Industry Documents Archive National Advisory Committee. 

Megan K. Friedel is Lead Archivist and Head of Collections Management & Stewardship for the University of Colorado Boulder Libraries’ Rare and Distinctive Collections, where she manages all operations for CU Boulder’s Archives. She has worked professionally as an archivist for over two decades and held positions at the Massachusetts History Society, Oregon Historical Society, History Colorado, and the University of Alaska Anchorage’s Archives & Special Collections, before coming to CU Boulder in 2018. She formerly served as President of the Society of Rocky Mountain Archivists and on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Western Archives, and she currently serves as a member of the SAA Archival Repatriation Committee. Since 2014, she has worked closely with members of Colorado’s Chicano/a/x community, including alumni of CU Boulder, to document and provide access to the state’s history of El Movimiento, the Chicano social justice movement, and the legacy of Los Seis de Boulder. Friedel holds an M.S.L.I.S. and a M.A. in history, both from Simmons University.

Ashlyn Velte is the Senior Processing Archivist and Assistant Professor at the University of Colorado Boulder Libraries’ Rare and Distinctive Collections, where she is responsible for collection management, project prioritization, processing standards, and student supervision. Her previous professional experience was at the University of Idaho. Her research has focused on digital preservation workflows, and balancing privacy and access in archives. She has served on the Society of American Archivists’ Privacy & Confidentiality Section’s steering committee since 2021. Velte previously held leadership roles in Society of Rocky Mountain Archivists and Northwest Archivists. In 2018, she was named an ALA Emerging Leader. She holds an M.S.L.S. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a certificate in digital curation.
