In issue 87.1 of American Archivist, Terry Baxter offers insights into the state of the profession in his Presidential Address from the 2023 Joint Annual Meeting; Natalie Bond interrogates the value and narratives around congressional paper collections; and Stephanie Bredbenner, Alison Fulmer, Rose Oliveira-Abbey, and Meghan R. Rinn examine the prevalence of contingent employment in archives through analysis of the 2021 New England Archivists Contingent Employment Study.
Other articles include Sony Prosper's 2023 Pease Award-winning essay, "Conceptualizing Records: Community Archives Describing Themselves," as well as articles on promotion and tenure for academic archivists, archival engagement and value measurement, and the uneven development of oral history release forms. Also in this issue, read seven excellent reviews on recent archives publications.
On the Cover: A red heart, pierced by and containing three arrows, sits in a black circle. This piece of digital art is by Shaun Slifer, a founding member of the Justseeds Artists' Cooperative. About his art, Slifer writes, "I sketched out the first version of this icon one day after the Tree of Life Synagogue shooting in my home city of Pittsburgh, where I've worked to run the Justseeds office for years. This is a pictographic effort combining complex feelings of anti-fascist rage with my deep belief in the need to work from a position of love. It is a combination of the Three Arrows/Drei Pfeile symbol—historically associated with the paramilitary Iron Front/Eiserne Front and carried into modern times as a continued symbol of militant anti-fascism—with a common heart outline."
