July 21, 2023—On Monday, July 17, SAA executive director Jacqualine Price Osafo attended the presentation of the National Medal for Museum and Library Service at the White House in Washington, DC. The event honored the eight recipients of the 2023 National Medal for Museum and Library Service, the nation’s highest honor given to museums and libraries that demonstrate excellence in service to their communities, and included First Lady Jill Biden, IMLS Director Crosby Kemper, and the new Archivist of the United States Dr. Colleen Shogan in attendance. Since 1996, the award has honored 182 institutions that exemplify extraordinary and innovative approaches to community service.
This year, the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) awarded medals to Kuskokwim Consortium Library; LA County Library; Long Branch Free Public Library; Toledo Lucas County Public Library; Center of Science and Industry (COSI); Jim Gatchell Memorial Museum; Museum of Discovery and Science; and Riverside Art Museum.
