SAA Endorses Statement on Essential Characteristics of the Archivist of the United States

February 15, 2022—SAA has endorsed a statement prepared by the Council of State Archivists (CoSA) regarding the essential characteristics of the Archivist of the United States, in light of David S. Ferriero announcing his retirement this spring. As the primary organization representing the custodians of state records, CoSA is obligated to articulate its expectations for the role and relationship between the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) and the various state and territorial archives. SAA joins the American Historical Association, The National Council on Public History, the National Coalition for History, the Organization of American Historians, and the National Association of Government Archives & Records Administrators in endorsing the statement.
