This year’s Oral History Section Session, as in years past, will be full of informative and inspiring stories on current projects and future practices for the oral history discipline. Things will kick off with a presentation of the newly-elected section members. Steven Sielaff and Jaycie Vos from the Oral History Association Task Force will discuss an exciting project involving description standards for oral histories and an upcoming environmental survey.
The session topic this year concerns utilizing oral histories to document social movements and strategies for conducting oral history interviews in the moment. The panel will consist of three speakers who will discuss ongoing oral history projects that uncover community stories to combat archival silence. The speakers will also address challenges confronted during their work in the current political climate. Katrina Vandeven (who also has a piece in this newsletter) will discuss the Women’s March on Washington Archives Project, focusing particularly on the interviews collected during the nationwide protest marches on January 21, 2017. Sarah Loose will present on her project Amamantar y Migrar (Breastfeeding and Migration) which explores the impacts of migration on pregnancy, birthing, breastfeeding, and parenting especially among low-income and undocumented immigrant workers. Laura Lo Forti will share the Vanport Story Harvest project that relates the stories of a vibrant community and explores the effects of displacement and gentrification.
