Oral History Section's Annual Meeting 

Meeting notes

Wednesday, June 28th 

12pm-1:30pm EDT / 9am-10:30am PDT.

1. Welcome (12pm)

  • Vice Chair/Chair Elect Krystal Tribbett welcomed attendees to the Oral History Section’s Annual Meeting. Dr. Tribbett summarized the upcoming presentations for the meeting and explained the meeting’s agenda. Dr. Tribbett thanked Chair John Davis and Past Chair Lindsay Hiltunen. She also acknowledged the other members of the OHS steering committee—Kristin Morris, Kopana Terry, Dr. Elissa Stroman, and Dr. Francena Turner—for their work on the steering committee and in planning the annual meeting.

2. Business Meeting (12:05 - 12:15)

  • Outgoing Chair John Davis updated the section on progress on transcription on the SAA 75th Anniversary presidents’ oral history project. The project is nearly completed, with help from section members Kristin Morris, Francena Turner, and Patrick Daglaris. One lengthy interview transcript with former SAA president William Maher remains to be edited before everything will be delivered to UW-M and the project concludes. Davis asked for a volunteer to help finish the Maher interview transcription.

     

  • Past Chair Lindsay Hiltunen gave an update on the section’s upcoming election 

  • Hiltunen provided an update on the section’s Twitter account, as well as other social media/outreach efforts

  • At this point, Davis passed the position of Chair officially to Dr. Tribbett, who offered her thanks and some thoughts on the year ahead. She also acknowledged outgoing members of the steering committee, Dr. Stroman and Dr. Turner.

3. Presentations (12:15 - 1:00)

  • The John G. Heyburn II Initiative, Anu Kasarabada, John G. Heyburn Archivist for the Special Collections Research Center at the University of Kentucky.
  • The D.C. Punk Fanzines Oral History Project at the University of Maryland, John Davis, Curator of Special Collections in Performing Arts at the University of Maryland
  • Down the Bay Oral History Project; Mobile, Alabama, Deborah Gurt, Interim Director and Assistant Librarian at the Doy Leale McCall Manuscript and Rare Book Library at the University of South Alabama.

5. Year End Reflections and Hopes for the Upcoming Year (1:15-1:30 pm)

  • OHS members provided feedback on the types of programming they would like to see throughout the year. Members also provided suggestions for ways to improve section engagement and community. Suggestions were submitted using the Jamboard online tool.
