2020 Independent Archivists Section Elections

Here’s our slate of candidates and their information: 

Vice Chair / Chair Elect: 

Ingi House 
Ingi House is the new Director of the National Archives at Denver. She returned to NARA from the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA), where she managed DPAA’s District of Columbia Knowledge Management and Archives. Among her many duties, she provided advice on the management and organization of information and ensured records were preserved, maintained, and properly disposed of following established guidelines. Prior to her work with DPAA, Ingi was an archivist at the National Archives at San Francisco and an archivist with the U.S. Navy Seabee Museum in Port Hueneme, California. She has also worked at the Defense Acquisition University and various other libraries and archives.
Ingi has a Bachelor of Science in History from the University of Kansas and a Master of Library Science from Emporia State University.

Term Statement:
During this term I would like to support and coordinate with the chair in order to accomplish the mission of the IA section. In addition, I would like to outreach more and coordinate more resources for Independent and Solo archivists, including virtual chats where we can exchange ideas on more informal level and have a safe place to vent.

Steering Committee: 

Gina Tecos
Gina Tecos lives in metro Detroit and works as an independent contractor providing consulting services through her company Desk Set Consulting. Past experience includes working as an Archivist for the National Automotive History Collection at Detroit Public Library-- providing reference, tours of the Archives, and processing manuscript and photo collections. She also was an Archivist for five years at Cranbrook Center for Collections, creating and maintaining Cranbrook’s digital collections, managing students and volunteers, curating archival exhibitions, and providing research assistance. In addition to archival work, Gina has experience working with historical objects, writing and editing documentation for archival software, and cataloging art collections in the Detroit area.
Gina has B.A. in English from the University of the Pacific and a Master’s degree in Information Science (Archives and Records Administration emphasis) from the University of Michigan.

Term Statement:
During this term I would like to help facilitate conversations with other independent archivists about themes and current issues in the field. I am also interested in compiling and preparing topics to discuss at section events, on the section web site, and at the annual meeting. 

David Spriegel
David Spriegel is from the northern suburbs of Chicago. Mr. Spriegel attended Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota where he majored in history, graduating in 2012; his senior thesis examined the George H. W. Bush administration’s response to the Tiananmen Square massacre.  
Mr. Spriegel next studied library science at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, graduating in 2013. Courses included archives, special collections, and metadata. He holds the Certified Archivist credential.  
Mr. Spriegel’s professional career is diverse. Previous experiences have included an internship in the manuscripts division of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library; successive internships in the Saint Mary’s University archives; several projects as an independent records management consultant for local government agencies in Illinois; and managing an audio-visual digitization effort in the corporate archives of a large Illinois pharmaceutical company. Later, he assisted a federal agency as a digital archivist, working for the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Most recently, Mr. Spriegel worked at the Alabama Department of Archives and History where he served as the Secretary of State Liaison archivist.             
Term Statement: 
My name is David Spriegel and I’m a candidate for the steering committee of the SAA’s Independent Archivist Section.  During my term I will support, “the sharing of ideas, information, and support amongst archivists outside the traditional archival repository.” I will also use my diverse professional experiences (as an independent consultant for records management with local government agencies) to, “offer members advice and support” on various topics. Additionally, my voice as an archivist who identifies as disabled, will further add to the discussions and resulting work of the section. 

William Coates
William Coates is an archivist at Glenn Horowitz Bookseller. Previously, he was an archivist and librarian at Defense Acquisition University. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Classics and Civil War Era Studies from Gettysburg College and a Master's in Library Science and a Master's in History from Indiana University.

Term Statement:
Throughout my term, I would like to collaborate on building and sharing resources, as well as help create more opportunities for outreach. I am especially interested in reaching out to early career members of the IA section and getting them involved.
