  • 2011-2013: Archives Matrix Steering Committee

Statement of interest: I began working with EAD early in my career when, as a new encoder with little formal training, I relied heavily on resources created by groups like the EAD Roundtable to fill gaps in my knowledge. I continue to believe that collaboration is essential to both implementing and maintaining encoding operations, not only for new encoders but also for those adopting updated standards and preparing for the transition to EAD3. As Co-Chair of the Steering Committee, I look forward to encouraging ongoing collaboration at the national level in order to make EAD implementation feasible for as many repositories as possible and to help us pool our knowledge and share our experiences to facilitate the switch to EAD3. With major changes to familiar standards expected, this year promises to be eventful and I would be honored to put my encoding experience, enthusiasm, and organizational skills to work toward meeting our collective needs.

Steering Committee candidates

Benjamin Johnson

Benjamin JohnsonBaker Library, Harvard Business School

Education and Experience

Ben Johnson is Senior Processing Archivist at Baker Library, Harvard Business School where he provides access to manuscript, archival, and photograph collections and born-digital and electronic content relating to business education and business and social history. Prior to coming to HBS, Ben worked at the Massachusetts Historical Society providing access to manuscripts, photographs and three-dimensional artifacts. Ben has an MLIS from Simmons College and BA in History from Wheaton College (Mass.).

Statement of Interest: Increasing the discoverability of collections is at the core of what archivists do everyday. With new the latest innovations in EAD3 and ArchivesSpace we are currently in an exciting time. Greater access to our collections can only be achieved with well documented standardization and best practices. Coming up with innovative ideas to use EAD to promote our collections will continue to push us in the right direction.

Laura Starratt

Laura StarrattManuscript Archivist, Emory University

Education and Experience

I attended the University of Tennessee, School of Information Sciences and finished my degree in 2009. Since then, I have worked and volunteered at a number of special collections including the University of Georgia, Georgia State University, McClung Museum of Natural History and Culture, East Tennessee Historical Society, Highlander Research and Education Center, Atlanta History Center, and at my current position at Emory University. I have held leadership positions on SAA's Manuscript Repository Section, EAD roundtable, and the Issues and Advocacy roundtable (serving as Chair in 2012). I am also active with the Society of Georgia Archivists. I have been on the SGA Board for the last three years, holding positions as the chair of the Georgia Archives Month committee, Program chair for the 2014 annual meeting, and the Local Arrangements chair for the upcoming 2015 meeting. I am also the SGA representative for the Regional Archives Advocacy consortium.

Statement of Interest: As a member for the last two years, I really enjoyed my time on the steering committee. When I joined, I was placed on a committee to help highlight the changes and uses of EAD3. Because of the delay in the EAD3 roll out, I am running for the steering committee again so that I can follow through with what I signed up for and help to ease the profession's transfer to EAD3.

Statement of Interest: At the California Digital Library (CDL), I provide support for Online Archive of California (OAC) and Calisphere operations and initiatives. I've had long-term experience with the EAD standard, including the creation of "best practices" for OAC contributors, and the development of tools and services to support contributors with creating and publishing finding aids in OAC. With the upcoming formal release of EAD3, it will be an important time for individual archives and aggregators to engage with the new standard, think through benefits and implications for adopting it, and begin to sketch out deployment plans. The EAD RT can serve a critical role during this timeframe by raising awareness and facilitating implementation of the new standard. I've looked towards opportunities to help in this regard. As a recent example, I've been involved in coordinating the work of an EAD3 Study Group — in coordination with the EAD RT — to prepare a report on initial implementation plans being formulated by software developers and EAD aggregators; this report is now available on the EAD RT microsite. I look forward to additional opportunities to help move forward the work of the EAD RT.
