2018-2019 Archivists and Archives of Color Section Slate of Candidates

Three candidates for two offices:

Vice Chair (two-year term: first year as Vice-Chair and second year as Chair)

Barrye Brown

Barrye Brown currently serves as Processing Archivist at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. She holds a BA degree in History from Dillard University, a MA degree in Atlantic World History with a focus on African-Atlantic Diaspora from Rice University, and a MSLS degree with a concentration in Archives and Records Management from UNC-Chapel Hill. Previously, she worked as Reference and Outreach Archivist for the Avery Research Center at the College of Charleston, and as a Carolina Academic Library Associate for the Southern Historical Collection and the Sonja Haynes Stone Center Library at UNC – Chapel Hill. As an archivist, she greatly enjoys working with individuals, families, and communities to help preserve the materials that document their life stories and legacies. She is a member of the Society of American Archivists (SAA). In 2013, she was a recipient of the SAA Mosaic Scholarship and the ALA Spectrum Scholarship.

Statement of Interest and Goals:

I am interested in taking a more active role in promoting diversity, inclusion, and equity within archival holdings, as well as within the archival profession and I think that being the Vice Chair/Chair Elect would grant me the opportunity to do so. If elected, I hope to facilitate discussions (online and/or in-person) among our members on current events related to accountability, social justice, and the power of archives in our everyday lives. It is imperative that we, as archivists, continue to document, collect, and preserve what is occurring, in order to provide the necessary socio-historical context to the diverse communities we serve. We would all benefit from dialoguing with one another about these issues and voicing our concerns. Currently, I’m serving as a member of the SAA Program Committee and have previously served as a member of the Archivists and Archives of Color Roundtable History Task force.

Kellee Warren

Kellee E. Warren is Instructor and Special Collections Librarian for University of Illinois at Chicago. Her article "We Need These Bodies, but Not Their Knowledge: Black Women in the Archival Science Profession, and Their Connection to the Archives of Enslaved Black Women in The French Antilles" was published in the Spring 2016 edition of Library Trends. Her research interests include critical information literacy and culturally sustaining pedagogy in the Special Collections classroom, online learning, Twitter social media platform, and connecting underrepresented groups to their cultural heritage through traditional and non-traditional archival source materials.

Statement of Interest and Goals:

My interest in the position of Vice Chair of the Archivists and Archives of Color Section is in supporting our members in the areas of mentorship, employment, and scholarship.

Steering Committee Member (two year term, social media focus)

Brittany Newberry

Brittany Newberry is a Processing Archivist at the Atlanta University Center Robert W. Woodruff Library. She received a Master of Science degree in Library and Information Science with a concentration in Archives Management from Simmons College. She is a member of the Society of American Archivists and the Society of Georgia Archivists. Brittany is an intern for the Society of American Archivists, Archivists and Archives of Color Section. She was recently appointed to the Society of American Archivists Membership Committee. She serves as the Assistant Outreach Manager for the Society of Georgia Archivists. Brittany serves as a member and co-chair of the Testing sub-team of the ArchivesSpace User Advisory Council. Her work focuses on processing collections of underrepresented groups, such as African American women. Brittany's research and professional interests include African American archives, academic or research archives, and social justice, diversity and archival activism.

Statement of Interest and Goals:

I am interested in becoming a steering committee member of AAC because I want to promote the work and contributions of archivists and archives of color. As a group, AAC needs to continue to interact with its members and provide meaningful resources. I want to ensure that members have access to the activities of the section. I have served as an intern for AAC for the past year and I am interested in continuing my service to the section and being more involved. As a steering committee member, I would work with the steering committee and membership to promote the section and identify more ways in which AAC can utilize social media to distribute information and advocate for the section and profession. The increased use of social media will bring greater awareness to the work and accomplishments of AAC and its members.
