August 2008

WCRT meeting at the annual SAA Conference, San Francisco, CA

The program, held at the GLBT Historical Society, began with Karen Offen, feminist scholar of French history, providing a presentation on the online International Museum of Women. She was followed by feminist labor historian, Glenna Matthews, who discussed researching working-class women beginning in the 1960s to the present.

Purpose: to discuss session proposal ideas for SAA 2005. The Roundtable invites ANYONE who is interested in generating session proposals that involve or highlight women's collections or women's history. We strongly encourage all who have sought endorsements from WCRT in the past to join us.

March 2003 - Women's History Month

The Mother of all Midwives
Wednesday, March 5, 2003, 7:00 p.m., Neilson Library Browsing Room, Smith College. Sponsored by the Sophia Smith Collection, Smith College, Northampton, Massachusetts.

Ina May Gaskin, author of Ina May Gaskin's Guide to Childbirth, will give a book talk. Ms. Gaskin is sometimes called the mother of modern midwifery and a co-founder of Midwives Alliance of North America. Her archives are part of the SSC.

Shaping History: Chicago Jewish Women in the 20th Century
March 9 - October 31, 2003. Gallery of Chicago Jewish History, Spertus Institute of Jewish Studies, Chicago, IL.

This exhibition features holdings from the Chicago Jewish Archives, including photographs, documents and artifacts, which trace the history of Chicago Jewish women from the founding of the National Council of Jewish Women in 1893 to civil rights activists of the 1960s and politicians of the 1990s.
         
Women and Life on Earth
Saturday, March 22, 2003, 2-6 p.m. Alumnae Gym, Level A, Smith College. Sponsored by the Sophia Smith Collection, Smith College, Northampton, Massachusetts.

The Sophia Smith Collection will host a celebration of Women and Life on Earth, an international ecofeminist and peace organization whose archives will become part of the SSC. There will be presentations by writer-activist Grace Paley, scholar-activist Jean Grossholtz, peace activist Frances Crowe and others, an open mike, and a new cabaret piece titled "Globalize This!" Life in the Arts: Women's Experience

The 12th Annual Women's Conference will be held 22 March 2003 at the Women in Leadership Archives, Gannon Center, LOYOLA UNIVERSITY CHICAGO. This year's topic is "Life in the Arts: Women's Experience." The featured speaker is Nicole Hollander whose cartoon strip SYLVIA appears daily and weekly in over 80 newspapers around the country.
