Emily Mizokami
After 27 years in retail, an injury prompted me to change the course of my life and pursue a different career. I have a BA in Politics from UCSC and a life-long passion for valuing history and serving my community. I am in my second semester at San Jose State's MLIS program and an active member of the SAA's student chapter at SJSU. As a student assistant at the Center for Sacramento History, I learn more every day about the rewards and challenges of maintaining archives and meeting the needs of the local community and others from around the country. I also recently accomplished a personal goal of mine by spearheading the successful campaign to rename three schools in our school district, as well as, serve on the district's committee to accomplish this goal. This three-year process gave me the skills to work with a range of members of the community such as: board members, district staff, school administrators, teachers, students, the media, and members of the California Indian community. I have also volunteered with my county's election board as a clerk since 2005 and a supervisor since 2018. I know how to work with lots of personality types, manage challenging situations, and collaborate to achieve results and enact long-lasting change. Archivists need to continually adapt due to climate change, political upheaval, ever-changing technology, and budget constraints and I would love to help in any way I can!
