Question posed by Nominating Committee:

SAA’s strategic plan emphasizes the importance of diversifying the profession using a broad definition of diversity (race, culture, geography, institutional type, sexual orientation, age, constituent group, etc.). How is SAA currently cultivating a diverse group of future leaders for the organization, and how would you strive to represent this diversity within the slate of candidates?

Candidate's Response:

SAA has had an increasingly strong track record of cultivating a diverse group of future leaders for the organization. First, SAA has recognized and promoted the need for diversity “from the top down,” encouraging the idea that as leaders in SAA, we all need to be thinking of it as a diverse organization. This is demonstrated in Elizabeth Adkins’ 2007 Presidential Address, the 2010 SAA Statement on Diversity, and the 2014-2018 Strategic Plan. Second, SAA recognizes and awards diversity among its members in the annual Diversity Award, established in 2011. Third, SAA encourages a more “grassroots” approach to diversity through its Diversity Committee. Through these three areas, SAA addresses the issue of diversity from all angles, crossing the spectrum from governance to the individual member.

The key to the Nominating Committee striving to represent diversity within the slate of candidates is being aware of and promoting diversity at the early stages of the slating process. Before a pool of prospects is even discussed, the Nominating Committee should develop a matrix with various categories, such as institution type, section membership, round table membership, tenure in SAA, etc. When adding a prospective candidate to the matrix list, that candidate should be “coded.” This process will permit the Nominating Committee to see the prospects from a more balanced angle, allowing them to identify whether or not the potential slate is relatively diverse. Additionally, the Nominating Committee should develop at least one candidate question about how SAA can become a more diverse organization. This ensures that each nominee will address the issue.
