Thesis Topic and Supervisor:

The normal term for initial registration in ARST 599 is your third term in the program. If you think you wish to write a thesis, consult, by the end of the term in which you complete the first 24 credits of course work, both your adviser and any other faculty member(s) whose interests appear relevant to your area(s) of interest. These discussions will lead to a rough determination of a topic and the identification of a faculty member, who may or may not be the person of your first preference and who is normally in the professorial ranks, as your supervisor. He or she will help you prepare a formal thesis proposal containing the following information:

  • Your name;
  • A working title for your thesis;
  • A summary of the project:
  1.
    1. Its aim;
    2. Its relationship to existing knowledge of the topic;
    3. Your research methods and plan;
    4. A summary of possible difficulties and means of overcoming them;
    5. A proposed outline of chapters; and,
    6. A schedule of work including proposed completion date.

Your supervisor will also discuss with you and other interested faculty members any course work that may be needed in conjunction with your independent investigations. For additional information go to http://www.slais.ubc.ca/COURSES/coursdes/arst/arst599.htm
