Goal: To give you the intellectual framework with which to undertake appraisal of archival material.

Objectives:

  1. To provide you with an understanding of the concept of appraisal in archival science.
  2. To prepare you to make professional decisions concerning the selection and acquisition of archival material, and the formation of the documentary heritage.
  3. To enable you to develop and implement acquisitions plans.
  4. To develop critical appreciation of the pertinent archival literature.

Content:

  1. The concept of appraisal, the principles governing it, and the assignment of responsibility for it.
  2. The purposes of appraisal for selection and the methods guiding it.
  3. The purposes of appraisal for acquisition and the methods guiding it.
  4. The procedures for establishing physical and legal custody of accessions.
