Pre-Requisites: ARST 510, ARST 515, ARST 516, ARST 520

Goal: To give you an understanding of the requirements and methods for preserving archival material.

Objectives:

  1. To prepare to make both planning and policy decisions regarding the preservation of collections.
  2. To understand the structure and deterioration of common materials, and the current methods for extending their longevity. 3)To become familiar with information resources on preservation.
  3. To gain familiarity with some basic environmental instrumentation and preservation techniques.

Content:

  1. Historical overview of preservation.
  2. Conservation ethics.
  3. Composition and degradation of common archival and library collections from a materials science perspective.
  4. Integrated pest management.
  5. Preservation microforms.
  6. Strategies for environmental control.
  7. Photograph identification.
  8. Machine-readable media.
  9. Emergency preparedness.
