Electronic Description of Archival Materials
Catalog Description
Application of document analysis to produce MARC records, Dublin Core records, SGML/XML tagging; overview of electronic publishing and Web publication of archival materials and finding aids.
Course Objectives
By the end of the course, the student will be able to
Create valid XML documents using a DTD
Create CSS style sheets with which to display the XML documents
Analyze an archival finding aid and create a DACS-compliant authority record for XML markup with an appropriate DTD
Mark up an archival finding aid and a structured authority record using the appropriate DTD and satisfying a professionally accepted standard
Create a MARC record for each XML document
Discuss a variety of issues that arise in publishing historical documents on the Web
