Be the Change: Call for SAA Leader Self-Nominations

Derek T. Mosley, SAA Vice-President/President-Elect

Every year, the Vice President is charged with appointments to committees and appointed groups. As I embark on this task during my term, I want to call everyone to action.

We often talk about how SAA could be better. If you have ideas and thoughts that you feel could be beneficial to the growth of SAA, please volunteer. The future of SAA is in the hands of its members. Those willing to volunteer and serve in one of the many open seats are the ones that move us forward as a profession.

Change is constantly happening, even if it may be slow. I encourage you to be the change you wish to see within SAA and the larger profession. I want you to help push SAA to new heights and a brighter future. I began my service to SAA at the section level and have consistently volunteered since that first role, finding different places to contribute and grow, both professionally and personally. I have witnessed many new and innovative ideas and programs that have come from dedicated members like you. But such ideas can only happen when people step up.

What will SAA look like in 20 years? How can we evolve with changing technology? Are we moving the archives profession forward? I encourage you to BE THE CHANGE and push SAA toward answering these questions.

How to Volunteer

For the 2025 appointments cycle, there are more than 80 positions to be filled across SAA’s 25+ appointed groups, which include boards, committees, subcommittees, task forces, and working groups. Review the list of available positions below and choose up to five groups for which you feel interested and compelled to serve. Then, submit your leadership self-nomination form by December 15, 2024.

There are many ways to learn about an SAA group before applying. Check the group’s microsite for recent information and the current leadership roster. Ask current group members about their experiences, the time commitment, ebbs and flows in the work, and relationships to other component groups. SAA’s Leader Resources page also has great information about the general responsibilities of leadership positions.

Starting in January 2025, the Appointments Committee will review and consult with group leaders to make sure we understand each group’s needs, particularly regarding the diversity of our membership. In this context, diversity includes race and ethnicity, gender identity/expression, years in the profession, geographic region, abilities, and type of archival repository experience. Individuals will be appointed to one position at a time, and current leaders will not be reappointed to a second term unless there is a critical requirement to continue some aspect of the work beyond their original term.

Appointments Available in 2025

The following groups will have vacancies, with new terms beginning in August 2025. Review descriptions of the groups by following the links below, and then volunteer to serve. The call for the 2026 Host Committee will be done once the site location for the 2026 ARCHIVES*RECORDS has been confirmed. Also, this year, the Archival Worker Labor Task Force and Membership Funding and Pathways for Diverse Archives Worker Task Force will be midterm appointments; the term will start in March 2025.
