May 11, 2023—The United States Senate voted yesterday to confirm Dr. Colleen Shogan as the 11th Archivist of the United States. Dr. Shogan was nominated by President Biden on August 3, 2022. She will begin her tenure as the head of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) next week, succeeding former AOTUS David S. Ferriero, who retired in April 2022. Dr. Shogan will be the first woman to permanently hold the position of AOTUS.
The Society of American Archivists looks forward to working with NARA as the agency moves forward under Dr. Shogan’s leadership. The agency plays a unique and critical role in our democracy by preserving the essential evidence of our government, enabling people across the country to make history meaningful and to hold our government accountable. As the largest archives in the country, NARA has a special role in providing guidance for the whole of the archival profession, and as the country’s largest and oldest professional organization for archivists, SAA hopes to continue working with NARA to enhance and promote the work of archivists everywhere.
