Conference Call Minutes: September 2016

DAS Subcommittee Conference Call Minutes

9/14/16

Present:  Ghaznavi (Chair), Lindberg, Martzahl, McAninch, Mitchem, Schaefer (members); Capodilupo, and De Sutter (staff).  Absent: Brancato, Gengenbach, Lassere, and Legg.

Ghaznavi welcomed Pamela Mitchem, one of DAS SC’s new members and gave a short overview.

  • Group talked an orientation call to ensure that new members aren’t just dropped into ongoing conversation.  Part of that orientation will include an overview of the Liaison Chart and the role of liaisons in assisting developers/instructors.
  • Courses need to be re-allocated and new members are asked to look at the courses that are currently without a liaison.
  •  We need to find out what everyone’s area of expertise is so new members can choose or indicate what courses they’d like to liaise with;
  • De Sutter to do a Doodle poll to schedule a separate call with new members and ask Kate Legg to join.

Courses/webinars under development

  • McAninch has been communicating with C. Kussmann about the Tool Selection and Management (i.e. The Care and Feeding of Tools) proposal, suggested ideas and that outline needs to be more fleshed it out.   He went on to explain more about the back and forth between liaisons and developers and “nursing it along.”  This outline was good but some important things were missing including proposed links to the course by the MI folks, she wasn’t sure what exercises should be done; how to accomplish that without students  having to install tools; how to get students up to speed; buddy system?
  • Schaefer mentioned software that allows you to package the whole environment; she offered to do research on this; it’s a developer’s distributed environment and that might help out.  De Sutter mentioned that Bert Lyons distributed USBs in the Command Line Interface course and will share Bert’s electronic file with Schaefer.

Staff update

  • De Sutter’s update included a snap shot of course attendance, both for DAS and A&D.  Overall it’s decreasing with DAS still commanding larger audiences.  Demand for courses hasn’t decreased but people seem to wait longer and longer to register.  As a consequence we call more courses “a go” at the bare minimum that provides breakeven for direct expenses, only.
  • Staff (Black, Carlson, De Sutter, Downing, and Capodilupo) have been participating in LMS demos from Blue Sky and Abila.

Proposed Agenda for October (not necessarily in that order):

  • Welcome
  • Orientation for new and refresher for existing members
  • Walk through the microsite – consider how we can leverage this instead of emails;
  • Overview of where we are at – how does it correlate with Strategic plan
  • CoE activities
  • DAS Certificate Holder survey results
  • Lassere report – where do we go based on the results
  • Liaison Structure – allocation of courses
  • Comprehensive exam structure and maintenance report
  • Software package – Sibyl

Everyone was asked to propose topics that they believe should be discussed.
