Archives Must Be Allowed to Operate Without Political Interference

CHICAGO—In response to The Wall Street Journal article published on October 29, 2024, and the response posted by the Archivist of the United States, Dr. Colleen Shogan, on October 30, 2024, the Society of American Archivists affirms that archivists are professionals bound by a Code of Ethics guiding archival engagement. SAA stands with archivists in government agencies who are committed to non-partisan efforts to preserve the authenticity of government records. We also stand with archivists in government agencies who provide fair, equitable, and just representation of the historical record.

It is essential that the National Archives set an example of accurate representation of the nation's history and stand by its mission to "preserve, protect, and share the historical records of the United States." As always, SAA supports the professionals entrusted with stewardship of our collective history as they carry out their operations in times of political transitions.
