Meet the 2022 LAS Election Candidates

In 2022, the Lone Arrangers Section will elect new leadership to fill the following positions: Vice Chair/Chair, Regional Representative, Events Coordinator, and Web Liaison.

Meet the 2022 Candidates:

Vice Chair/Chair-Elect

Name:
Julie Yamashita, CA, DAS
Job Title: Archivist, Lanterman House

Candidate Statement:
I am the Archivist at the Lanterman House Museum in La Cañada Flintridge, California. As a lone arranger, my duties include creating digital and on-site exhibitions, managing collection digitization, teaching an online internship for local high school students, as well as writing for publications. In addition, I work to build connections with our community using a wide array of affordable high-tech and low-tech methods to make local history more inclusive. I have an MLIS in Archival Studies, an MA in Art History/Museum Studies, as well as being a Digital Archives Specialist and Certified Archivist.

I am currently an Executive Committee Member of L.A. as Subject, a group of institutions whose mission is to preserve and provide access, through an online directory, to archival materials of Los Angeles history. I also serve on L.A. as Subject’s Archives at Risk Committee, which provides assessment and support resources for member archives, many of whom have lone arrangers. I welcome the opportunity to assist the even broader community of SAA’s Lone Arrangers Section as Vice Chair/Chair-Elect.

If elected, I will support section members by listening to and responding to evolving needs and suggestions from members. I will encourage a highly collaborative relationship amongst section leadership to create relevant and helpful  programming and resources for section members.

Events Coordinator

Name:
Rebecca Leung

Job Title: Archives & Manuscripts Librarian, Mills College

Candidate Statement:

I have held the position of Lone Arrangers Events Coordinator for the past two years. When I first ran for this position, I wanted to create a sense of community for Lone Arrangers, something I was personally seeking as well. Over the past two years, these efforts have begun to come to fruition through our UnBOXed events: and LAS Community Exchange and LAS Treasures.

I am running for re-election as Events Coordinator so that I can continue to develop and expand our Events program. Some of my goals for the 2022-2024 term would be to find additional presenters to speak on topics relevant to our members, to encourage members to share in group events, and to work with the Regional Representatives team to highlight regional archives through events. As Events Coordinator, I would welcome collaborative input from LAS members and hope to continue to strengthen our community!

Web Liaison

Name:
Shaun Kirkpatrick

Job Title: Corporate Archivist, Chubb

Statement:

I have been a member of the Lone Arrangers Section for several years (presenting recently at the virtual "UnBOXed: LAS Treasures" event) and have always admired it for its practical supportiveness, most frequently demonstrated on the listserv but also at SAA gatherings.  I would be glad for the opportunity to contribute more to the group by maintaining and improving the resources on our website (in collaboration with other LAS leaders) as well as monitoring our presence on SAA Connect and other online platforms.

Bio:
Corporate archivist, Chubb (formerly ACE) Archives, 2013-present; other positions at ACE Archives, 2008-2012; para-professional archives employment in a government library/archives (2004-2008); archival internships in a university (2009), museum (2003), and national park (2002).  Past leadership roles in SAA Business Archives Section (secretary, 2015-2016), Delaware Valley Archivists Group (membership coordinator, 2017-2018; treasurer, 2020-2021), Archives Month Philly (Promotional Committee, 2015-2017), and at three Mid-Atlantic Regional Archives Conference meetings (Program Committee, Fall 2013; Promotional Committee for MARAC Business Archives Forum, Spring 2017; Local Arrangements Committee, Fall 2018).  Member of SAA since 2004; Certified Archivist since 2011.  I have been a true “lone arranger” for nearly six years, with no support staff (apart from one intern for a few months) since August 2016.

Regional Representative

Name: Bro. Dennis W. Moses, OFM Conv. (just call me Dennis or anything but late for supper)

Job Title: Archivist, Conventual Franciscan Friars, Province of Our Lady of Consolation, Mount Saint Francis, IN

Candidate Statement:

I have been here for 8 years now, having come from teaching history on the 7th/8th grade level (no purgatory time for me), subbing, and directing religious education programs. All of my education has been on the job. I thought that perhaps it is time to give back to those who have been so helpful to me in the Lone Arrangers section.

Name: Hilary Swett

Job Title: Archivist, Writers Guild Foundation

Candidate Statement:

I am Archivist at the Writers Guild Foundation, a non-profit entertainment library and archive in Los Angeles. Like all Lone Arrangers, I wear many hats and juggle shifting priorities and circumstances. I work with donors, appraise, process and manage collections, catalog new library and archives acquisitions, supervise interns, create exhibits, and answer research requests. Before earning my MLIS from San Jose State, I went to film school and worked in the entertainment industry.

Advice from the Lone Arrangers Section members has expanded my professional knowledge immensely as my duties have evolved over the years. Lone arrangers are often in such disparate and unique situations in our workplaces but the challenges and successes can be universal.  I look forward to facilitating connections between LAS members as a Regional Representative and supporting a community that is important to me.
