The Queer History Social Media Project is an initiative aimed at bringing the skills and insights of professional archivists, librarians, historians, and other social scientists involved in the study of LGBTQ history to bear in the improvement and enrichment of Wikipedia articles on topics, individuals, and organizations related to the LGBTQ experience throughout history.
In brief, project volunteers have begun compiling a list of significant gay, lesbian, bisexual, or queer-identified individuals, organizations, and events throughout history. Project volunteers are then identifying existing Wikipedia articles on these topics and adding links from those articles to the finding aids or catalog records of archival and manuscript collections that document these topics. When project volunteers determine that no Wikipedia article exist for any particular topic, they are authoring original articles and adding the appropriate links.
The working draft of the project proposal can be viewed online.
