To serve as a forum to educate archivists on the complexities and beauty of Native American archives of the western hemisphere and as a source of communication and inspiration for archivists working with Native American collections.
The Roundtable was formed as a result of a petition at the 2005 SAA Annual Meeting in New Orleans. On August 13, 2005, SAA Council approved the Roundtable by a unanimous vote. For more information see the article, "Strenthening Tribal Archives," by Briana Bob, in the September/October 2005 Outlook. David L. George-Shongo, Jr. was elected the first NAAR Chair in 2005.
