Question posed by Nominating Committee: How could you as treasurer help simultaneously ensure the financial well-being of SAA and bring more value to members?

If elected treasurer, I will consider SAA’s strategic plan; its values and mission; members’ values and priorities; and the areas in which SAA provides unique or exemplary services and products, and then I will analyze how the budget supports these. Having served on the SAA finance committee from 2010–2013, during the bleakest budget cycle SAA has experienced in decades as well as during continued recovery, I carefully examined expenses and sources of revenue to see how we could create the best value for SAA members while living within our budgetary restraints. As treasurer, I will continue to ask these kinds of questions to ensure that we are structuring our budget to maintain a strong and focused SAA, while maintaining necessary financial discipline. The strategic plan provides much of the structure needed for aligning the budget to priorities, and recent membership data provides input on priorities. Are we doing what we can with the means we have to achieve professional excellence; foster innovation; advocate for archives and archives; and promote diversity in both the profession and the archival record? SAA also needs to keep looking to the future, to determine what new developments and enhancements may be desired. What should SAA be doing in the next five to ten years, and how do we ensure the financial resources will be there in support? Will we have the budget to support our goals? If not, I will engage in conversations for finding creative ways to expand SAA’s available resources, considering reprioritizing goals, and exploring all reasonable options to support a strong SAA.
