Question posed by the Nominating Committee: What will be your criteria for choosing a slate of nominees, and how will those help SAA in its mission?

First and foremost, an ideal slate of candidates would consist of people who are passionate about what we do and who are ready to make a difference. This is one of the biggest characteristics that draw me towards identifying good leaders within our organization. A potential candidate’s energy and motivation to transform the profession is vital to his or her ability to shape SAA and further its organizational vision to “enable archivists to achieve professional excellence and foster innovation” within the field.

Additionally, I intend to identify potential candidates based their commitment to advancing the diversity of the membership, profession, and the archival record. I am very motivated to find nominees who are dedicated to supporting and representing diverse voices within the archives field and related professions. It is especially important to find candidates who are willing to speak up for constituent groups who may not have the ability, the opportunity, or the representation to speak for themselves within SAA. I would seek individuals who have a history of advocating for a more diverse and equitable culture and are motivated to continue that work. This enthusiasm will help further SAA’s core values and make our organization stronger, while also supporting SAA’s mission to promote the diversity of archives and archivists.

Finally, ideal nominees should be committed to keeping the organization accountable to its constituency and convicted to stand up for what they believe. This will advance our membership as a whole by developing trust and accountability between the leaders and the membership, and will also advance our profession by facilitating an environment that is open, inclusive, and participatory.
