Program Philosophy

The Indiana School of Library and Information Science established its Archives and Records Management Specialization in 2003. Over the years the Archives track has grown from a few courses to 12 core archival classes plus internships. The IU program provides classes in all the core archival activities but is particularly strong in records management, electronic records management and archival description. In addition to archival core classes students have the opportunity to enroll in a host of interdisciplinary knowledge courses, including classes in the information sciences, such as system analysis, organizational informatics, and metadata. Finally the Specialization offers many opportunities for internships at special collections on the IU Bloomington campus and within the city of Indianapolis. SLIS also offers related programs, such as the Digital Libraries Specialization (with the MIS or MLS), and the Rare Books and Manuscripts Librarianship Specializaiton and the MLS.

Facilities

The IU School of Library and Information Science (SLIS) maintains seminar and lecture rooms equipped with Ethernet networking facilities. In addition, the School has its own technology office and technology support for students. There are two labs open to all members of the SLIS community. The Shepherd Lab in the SLIS Information Commons has 17 Windows PCs and 6 machines running Apple's OS X. The Information Commons also houses a 28 station MAC OS X lab. SLIS is located in the Wells Library - also the location of the IU Archives.

Practicum/Internships/Assistantships Offered?

To receive the Specialization in Archives and Records Management all students must complete one 3 credit internship. There are many opportunities for internships on the IU Bloomington campus, including at the Office of University Archives and Records Management, the Lilly Library (Rare books and manuscripts), the Kinsey Institute, the Archives of Traditional Music, the Wylie House Museum, and the Black Film Center Archives. Within the city of Indianapolis, sites for internships include the Special Collections Department at Indiana University/Purdue University at Indianapolis (IUPUI), the Indiana State Archives, and the Indiana Historical Society. Students have worked to locate placements across the U.S. and globally. SLIS provides a service to assist students in locating opportunities for internships.

Research

SLIS faculty been ranked among the most widely cited in the field. We value research, and work to create opportunities for student research. http://www.slis.indiana.edu/news/story.php?story_id=1289 In the area of Archives, SLIS and Indiana University have partnered with the Southeast Archives Education Collaborative (SAEC): Four university library science or public history programs--Auburn University, Indiana University, Louisiana State University, and Middle Tennessee State University--have formed the SAEC, a collaborative to share faculty and students specializing in archives and records management. SEAC classes use compressed video which allows the instructor and one class at any one site to interact with students at the other four sites in live audio and video exchanges that come very close to the traditional classroom experience. Presently five core archival classes at IU are offered as a distance education class taught by one of the faculty at a non-IU SAEC partner institution.
